1. Hot air balloons

The image of candy coloured hot air balloons drifting over the honeycomb rock formations has become iconic of Cappadocia. 2. Local handicrafts

Cappadocia has a rich history of handmade carpets, Turkish tiles and pottery. The ceramics from this region have featured the same motifs for centuries. Wander its shopfronts to learn about these traditional handicrafts.

3. Goreme Open Air Museum

A benefit of exploring Cappadocia on foot is the chance to step inside its stunning rock-hewn churches and view these ornate frescoes and carvings up close. Persecuted Christians have fled to Cappadocia since the 2nd century, building cities as deep as 40 metres underground. In addition to churches, these underground labyrinths feature kitchens, wine storage areas, water wells and more, connected by a fortified tunnel system.

4. Kaymakli Underground City

Take a tour of the museum and learn how the ancient inhabitants of this region thrived undergound. There are over 30 underground villages in Cappadocia, with most still being excavated. Of those open to the public, Kaymakli is one of the lesser visited, making it much more comfortable to explore.

5. Try a pottery kebab

Learn how Cappadocia’s famous pottery can be used for cooking a delicious “pottery kebab”. Meat, vegetables and spices are combined in a clay jug that is sealed with bread dough before being fired in a clay oven. It’s quite an experience to have the blazing jug brought to your table and cracked open in front of you to reveal your piping hot meal!
