Itinerary

DAY 1 – SATURDAY                          CATANIA

Transfer to your hotel in the charming city of Catania. Enjoy a day at leisure. Overnight in Catania.

DAY 2 – SUNDAY                              CATANIA – SYRACUSE – NOTO – RAGUSA

Breakfast in the hotel and departure for Syracuse to visit the largest and most powerful Greek colony in Sicily: the Archaeological Park of Neapolis. Visit of the old town centre of Ortigia, with its stunning Piazza Duomo and Cathedral. Proceed to Noto, the capital of Sicilian baroque also called the “stone garden”, full of beautiful buildings and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A walk through the streets of the centre to admire the skill and ingenious creativity of local craftsmen. Noto’s baroque architecture is a plethora of elegant curves, floral weaves, perspective views, palaces and gardens, capitals and cherubs that adorn the façades of churches and monasteries. At the end of the visit proceed to Ragusa for overnight. (B,D)

DAY 3 – MONDAY                             RAGUSA – MODICA – PIAZZA ARMERINA – AGRIGENTO

Breakfast in the hotel and visit of Ragusa Ibla with its beautiful churches and the Ibleo garden. Then proceed to Modica, to admire its many baroque style treasures, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. To end the visit, stop for a taste of the typical products of the area. Departure to Piazza Armerina and visit the splendid Villa Romana del Casale, a building from the late imperial period and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Transfer to the hotel in Agrigento for overnight. (B,L,D)

DAY 4 – TUESDAY                             AGRIGENTO – MARSALA – SALINE – PALERMO

Breakfast in the hotel and visit of the famous Valley of the Temples, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Giunone, Concordia and Ercole temples can be admired. Departure for Marsala, that preserves a multitude of signs of the Phoenician, Arab and Norman dominations. At the end of the visit enjoy a wine tasting of the typical local wine. Proceed to the famous Via del Sale. The lagoon and the islands of Stagnone constitute a large nature reserve of enormous environmental value. Even today the salt marshes represent one of the oldest salt mining industries in the world. In the evening, arrival in Palermo for overnight. (B,L)

DAY 5 – WEDNESDAY                      PALERMO – MONREALE – PALERMO

Breakfast in the hotel and departure to visit Monreale, with its impressive Arab-Norman Cathedral and stunning Cloister. Return to Palermo. This city preserves monuments of the Arab-Norman period, including the beautiful Cathedral, the fascinating Byzantine Church of the Martorana and the Palatine Chapel, a higher example from the historical-artistic point of view of the coexistence between cultures and religions. Along the visit stop for a food surprise in a local bakery. Overnight in Palermo. (B,L)

DAY 6 – THURSDAY                          PALERMO – FAVIGNANA (AEGADIAN ISLANDS)

After breakfast, private transfer to the port of Trapani. Depart by hydrofoil to Favignana, the largest island of the Aegadian Islands. Free time in the afternoon. Overnight in Favignana. (B, D)

DAY 7 – FRIDAY                                FAVIGNANA (BOAT EXCURSION – CALA ROSSA, CALA AZZURRA, CALA ROTONDA)

In the morning, depart from the port of Favignana to take a boat tour of the island. You will discover interesting historical facts about the Tonnara Establishment and the Florio family, stopping at the most beautiful and evocative coves. The first stop will be at Cala Rossa, whose cliffs consist of splendid tuff quarries surrounded by a crystal-clear turquoise sea. Next you will reach Bue Marino and Cala Azzurra with its white sandy beach and the most transparent sea on the island-and Lido Burrone, where you will have time for a dip. You will then enjoy a relaxing break for a typical lunch aboard the boat once you reach the south side of the island (Marasolo/ Preveto). There will also be time for snorkelling or swimming to discover the picturesque cove. In the afternoon we return to Favignana, after a swim stop at Cala Rotonda with good coffee pastries, but not before a last swim at Cala del Pozzo. Overnight Favignana. (B, L, D)

DAY 8 – SATURDAY                         FAVIGNANA

After breakfast enjoy the day at leisure to get lost and discover the wonders of this beautiful island. You can stroll between the two town squares, letting yourself be captured by the traditional Mediterranean architecture characterized by white plaster and blue or green windows. But it is toward the waterfront that you will be confronted with an enchanted scenery similar to a painting: the small port of Favignana shows all its wonders of fishing nets, boats and anchors. Water lovers can take a dip in the sea in one of the splendid “creeks” offered by the island or, alternatively, choose to take an optional boat trip to Levanzo, a small fishing village where you can have a taste of granitas or homemade ice cream. Overnight Favignana. (B, D)

DAY 9 – SUNDAY                               FAVIGNANA – TRAPANI

Last free morning in Favignana, because by early afternoon you will be back in Trapani. Enjoy your time in the afternoon to enjoy the delightful historic centre of Trapani. Linked to Carthage historical enemy of Rome, Trapani still retains traces of a glorious past crossroads of cultures peoples and history. (B, D)

Elizabeth and Gordon Wood
Fantastic quality of hotel and expertise of the guide

Review for: Highlights of Sicily

The quality of the hotels, the places visited, the knowledge and expertise of the guide and the experiences we had, were fantastic. Perhaps our only question would be that we were a group of over 30 and we were of the understanding that Sun Island Tours were for groups smaller than this. Our overall impression of Sicily was of a vibrant culture with so much history behind it.

Reply from Sun Island Tours
Hi Elizabeth and Gordon, Thank you for your review. The Highlights of Sicily is not a small group tour, and is listed as such. However we will review further to see why you had that impression. Great to hear you had a wonderful time. Regards, John @ Sun Island Tours

September 2019

Review for: Florence, Tuscany & Beyond

My wife and I made an eight-day coach trip in the second week of September 2019. Italy is a beautiful country and what added to our rich and positive experience was the tour provided by Sun Island Tours. We experienced the value provided mainly through their tour leader, coach driver and hotels for stay etc. Worth a special mention are the two people that were highly rated by all on the tour – Sabrina Prassede, our tour leader was by far the best guide we have encountered in our years of travel. Here intuitive responsiveness, high energy levels, attention to specific needs of every tourist without diluting the planned itinerary and deep knowledge of the country, made the journey comfortable and stress-free for a diverse set of people travelling from five continents. She was very well supported by Paolo, the coach driver, who was the wonderfully skilled and who ensured the tour was very smooth, safe and prompt throughout. For those wanting to enjoy a stress-free Italy sojourn, we highly recommend them.

Solo Traveller

Review for: Rome, Florence & Cinque Terre by Rail

Generally it's good. I am a solo traveller. On some accommodation I was given a single bed. Which I found cramp and very tight. Quite uncomfortable. As a solo traveller, we are charge with extra for accommodation. So I think we deserved something better if not the best.
