Spain Tours Highlights & Experiences

Madrid

The biggest city and capital of Spain, complete with modern and old architecture, parks, palaces and museums. Located within the city centre are most of Madrid’s most popular attractions including the Royal Palace (the current residence of Spain’s monarch), Plaza Mayor (the city’s ancient main square) and three extraordinary museums that make up the city’s Golden Triangle of Art: the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza. Visit one of its many trendy rooftop bars and neighbourhoods and don’t leave without a shopping spree along the Gran Via.

Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the Spain’s top travel destinations with something for everyone. The laid-back city offers stunning coastlines combined with world renowned architecture, Catalan cuisine, lively shopping options and a glittering nightlife. The city is synonymous with Antoni Gaudi’s architecture – the unfinished Sagrada Familia being the most famous and extravagant of all.

Granada

Granada is one of the most intriguing cities to visit in southern Spain, famous for its medieval architecture dating back to the Moorish period, the most famous example being the Alhambra. The streets of Granada are packed with tapas bars, restaurants, bohemian cafes, and flamenco clubs.

Toledo

Toledo is a beautifully preserved city with a mix of Moorish and Gothic-Renaissance architecture, known as the imperial city. It is famous for its Christian, Jewish and Muslim monuments located within the walls of the old city, and is easily accessible from nearby Madrid.

Cordoba

It was once one of the greatest cities in the world, with many of its treasures still admired today. The historic Cordoba Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of tiny medieval streets, plazas, and whitewashed courtyards. Some of its most popular sites including the imposing Mosque-Cathedral.

Santiago de Compostela

The capital city of the Galicia region, Santiago de Compostela is famous for being the final destination of the traditional pilgrimage known as Camino de Santiago. The city is full of charming plazas with important landmarks, sprawled around the Santiago Cathedral where the tomb of St. James is located.

Seville

Seville is widely regarded as the home of  flamenco. The city is rich in Moorish heritage and home to some of Spain’s most notable landmarks. These include the Alcazar Castle complex (built during the Moorish Almohad dynasty) and the gothic Seville Cathedral where Christopher Columbus’ tomb is situated.

San Sebastian

This beautiful seaside city is well-loved for its excellent beaches and outstanding culinary traditions. It is crammed with restaurants, pintxo bars, designer shops and shopping malls. Don’t miss the beautiful La Concha beach with views of the breathtaking island of Santa Clara. San Sebastian is also a great base for trying some of the world’s most famous Michelin starred restaurants.

Valencia

You’ll go through Valencia on your way to La Tomatina – the tomato throwing festival. In the city itself, explore the old town and don’t miss the incredible Valencia City of Arts and Sciences – a futuristic complex in what was a riverbed that now holds an aquarium, Imax cinema, opera house and science museum.

Mallorca

The largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, Mallorca is surrounded by sparkling waters with jagged cliffs, secluded coves, and beautiful beaches lining its shores. The island’s main city and capital Palma de Mallorca is a small, cosmopolitan city filled with a mixture of medieval streets, baroque churches, bustling plazas and an imposing gothic cathedral.

Spain Tours & Packages Selection Tips

Find some of our top tips for choosing the perfect trip for you!

Major cities such as Barcelona and Madrid get very popular during peak seasons, pre-book your tours in advance to ensure you don’t miss out.
Spain has an extensive rail network, headlined by the high-speed AVE (Alta Velocidad Espanola) services, which serve many major cities at speeds up to 310 km/h. AVE presents perhaps the easiest way to travel between Barcelona and Madrid.
Avoid July and August as it is extremely hot. Temperatures are usually around 40 degrees.
Expect to eat late. Lunch is the main meal serviced between 1-4 pm, dinner is not until around 10 pm and usually lasts for hours. Most restaurants only serve light meals in the evening.
Do not forget most shops, restaurants and bars outside the larger cities close between 2 and 4 pm daily for Siesta.
Try and be there during one of their festivals. La Tomatina is perhaps the most fun where everyone has one large tomato fight. It is held on the last Wednesday in August.
If you are a 'foodie' then head to Basque Country. Whilst there try the local Kalomotxo, a blend of red wine and Coca Cola.
Beware of pickpockets in the large cities. Always leave any valuables at home and keep an eye on your belongings.
Remember to always have cash and coins as most small shops and many taxis do not accept credit cards.

How to Get to Spain

There are two major airports for long-haul arrivals into Spain: Barcelona-El Prat Airport, and Madrid-Barajas Airport, located in the capital. Furthermore, there are regional flights from other European cities into many Spanish airports. Major airlines such as Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways fly from Australia into Madrid and Barcelona.

Rail services from France and other European countries arrive into Barcelona and other Spanish cities. If arriving from Portugal, there are flights from Lisbon and Porto to various Spanish cities, as well as bus services in the south that connect Lisbon and the Algarve with Seville.

Great trip

Review for: Andalucia with Valencia

I really enjoyed the Andalusia and Valencia trip from Barcelona.  Great guides. Nice hotels and food. It was just like the photos. I am going back next year for a month to Seville and learning Spanish now in Sydney!  The Spanish people are so friendly. I loved the historic buildings.  People on the bus were from 22 countries! About 54 of us.

Review for: Spain & Portugal Splendours

We selected the 10 day Spain & Portugal Splendours tour as we were travelling to Madrid to stay with family and wanted to experience our first tour together. We found the tour independently from our agent and when we booked through our agent the price was the same which meant our agent could support us in emergencies which they had done before - great peace of mind even before we began. The tour began from Madrid and the first stop was Oviedo where we consolidated with another group who had stared earlier than us. As we progressed, we consolidated with more people joining and some leaving and new guide and bus / driver. Whilst some might find this disconcerting, we found it wonderful - new people as well as old and from varying countries and not just Aussies or Americans. Many were South Americans. Many spoke English, the others Spanish. Our guides spoke both and their English was good and they were careful to ensure the English speakers fully understood everything they said. The drivers and guides were most helpful with luggage where assistance was needed. We found the tour went at the right pace for us very few photo stops of a few minutes. Most stops were for a few hours and allowed us free time. The 2 two night stops really gave us an opportunity to explore with others we had made friends with. They offered optional tours in some towns which we did and which we found quite reasonably priced and again with English and Spanish speaking guides and found they really helped us appreciate the local aspects better. But even without these optional tours the experience was great and rewarding. Our tour guides supervised our check-in at each hotel (all of which we found most comfortable) and made sure we understood where the hotel was located in relation to the local city maps which they gave us at each stopover and explained how to best get around - walking, bus, metro or taxi as well as recommended places to eat - which we found excellent, timely and reasonable.. It was the little things that made the tour wonderful for us (in our early 70's) - some of which I have mentioned above, but there were many more! We are now planning our next trip with Sun Island Tours - probably Croatia

Dear Peter, Firstly thank you for your review. We really appreciate feedback such as the above, because it allows us to ensure that we are offering the high level of standard on our tours, that the industry and our Australian clients expect. Spain and Portugal are such magical destinations. We pride ourselves on our offering in that region, as you recognised, by merging different nationalities and cultures together, we are able to offer a more immersive tour. Plus it also allows us to offer weekly, guaranteed departures all year round. Great to hear about the professionalism and care that the guide had offered you, which we expect on every tour. I have spoken with your agent, Georgia, and have also passed on your feedback to her. We have an excellent cooperation with Georgia, who always looks after her clients, by finding the best product to suit their individual needs, and as you said, offering emergency support where and when needed. Cant wait to organise your Croatia trip. Please contact Georgia as soon as you are ready, because Croatia is such a hot destination, it books out quick! Most 2020 prices and availability are out now! Thanks again for your detailed feedback. Kind regards, John @ Sun Island Tours

Really enjoyable two week tour

Review for: The Best of Spain, Portugal & Morocco Tour

Really enjoyable two week tour of Spain Portugal and Morroco. Nice sized group and well organised. Only one hotel in Fez was disappointing. Guide and company notified. Extremely good guide, and a really well organised tour, of varying sizes as people joined for different parts of the tour.

Thanks Warwick. This tour is made up of smaller tours, hence why you receive varying groups of people. Makes for a great experience! Thanks and we look forward to seeing you again.
