Jordan Destination Guide

Jordan

Jordan is a nation straddling the East bank of the Jordan River, and extending out into the deserts of the Middle East. Visitors come for Petra first and foremost, but then they find out about the Roman city of Jerash, and the castles at Kerak and Ajloun; the accessibility of the Dead Sea from Amman, and the other-worldliness of Wadi Rum.

Jordan Tour Highlights & Experiences

Amman

Jordan’s fascinating capital city is situated on the hills between the vast desert and the Jordan Valley. Amman offers a rare combination of modern luxuries… from lively restaurants and nightlife to art galleries and boutiques, and ancient ruins including the historic Amman Citadel, the Roman Temple of Hercules and the 8th century Umayyad Palace.

Petra

Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered to be Jordan’s most famous attraction. Set in a narrow valley with tombs, temples and monuments carved into the surrounding pink sandstone cliffs, you will soon understand why Petra is also known as the “Rose City”. An Absolute lifetime bucket-list place to go to.

Jerash

Jerash is Jordan’s largest and most intriguing Roman site. It’s imposing ceremonial gates, colonnaded avenues, temples and theatres all give you a sense of how important this imperial centre was. Jerash is home to numerous amazing ruins, including Hadrian’s Arch, the remains of the Temple of Zeus and the Hippodrome which hosted chariot races.

Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo is approximately 710 metres above sea level and offers incredible panoramic views over areas of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea and even Jerusalem’s distant hills. It is a sight of religious significance as according to the Bible; it is where Moses lived out his final days and saw the Promised Land. It is also believed to be the site where Moses’ body is buried.

Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum in southern Jordan, is also known as the Valley of the Moon and is the largest Wadi in Jordan. Travellers staying in the area can overnight in Bedouin Camps located in the desert and glamping hotels. You can also participate in 4×4 tours, camel rides, riding Arabian horses, hiking and rock-climbing.

Aqaba

Aqaba is a Jordanian port city on the Red Sea and is home to the Islamic-era Aqaba Fort. Its many popular beach resorts include windsurfing, and the area is a top destination for scuba divers. With notable dive sites including Yamanieh coral reef in the Aqaba Marine Park.

Dead Sea

Floating in the Dead Sea is a quintessential thing to do in Jordan. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth accessible by road, and known for its highly salty waters. Visitors of both local and international nationalities seek the Dead Sea for its mineral-rich mud, known for its therapeutical and cosmetic miracles.

Madaba

Just 30km from Amman lies one of the most memorable places in the Holy Land, Madaba “The City of Mosaics”. Best known for its spectacular collection of Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, Madaba is home to the famous 6th century Mosaic Map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. The ancient town is a hot spot for religious tourism and remains as one of the most traveller friendly towns in Jordan.

Jordan Tours, Packages & Cruises Selection Tips

Find some of our top tips for choosing the perfect trip for you!

No matter where you come from you are going to need a visa to enter Jordan. Book return airport transfers and accommodation (minimum 2 nights) with Sun Island Tours and get the visa fee waived. Applies only for Australian passport holders. Passport copies must be sent at time of booking.
Despite being located in a region with a history of conflict, Jordan is one of the most tourist-friendly countries in the middle east. Hospitality is a deep-rooted tradition and violent crime is extremely rare.
In order to respect cultural norms, women should wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing anything revealing. As for men, it is important to bear in mind that it isn’t acceptable to walk around topless at any point in time.
Tap water is not drinkable in Jordan. Bottled water is recommended and readily available.
If you’re nervous about travelling to Jordan alone, book yourself onto a small group tour. Aside from being in the safe hands of a local expert guide, you’ll also experience the comfort of “safety in numbers”, as you explore the sights with a bunch of like-minded people.
Even though 90 percent of Jordanians are Muslim, drinking alcohol in moderation is widely accepted. You’ll find beer and wine is often listed on hotel and restaurant menus, and there are even a few bars in popular tourist spots and some of the big cities
If you are planning to visit Jordan during Ramadan, here is what to expect: Muslims fast from dawn to sunset so operating hours of tourist sites, banks, shops and restaurants may change slightly (i.e. open slightly later, and shut earlier). Alcohol is not sold and some places may switch to a special Ramadan menu or buffet. As a sign of respect, you should also try to avoid eating and drinking (even water) or smoking in public during the month of Ramadan.
Depending on your plans, Jordan’s best sights usually require a lot of walking on raw, uneven ground, so bring some good hiking boots, sneakers, or covered walking shoes.

How to Get to Jordan

There is no direct flight from Australia to Jordan, most routes include at least one layover in cities like Bangkok (BKK) or Doha (DOH). Many international carriers fly into Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport (AMM). These carriers are Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Emirates, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines, and Singapore Airlines.

You can also enter Jordan from Israel via one of three border crossings that are available. The Allenby/King Hussein bridge border crossing is the most reliable.

JUST DO IT !!!

Review for: Jordan & The Bedouins

THIS IS A MUST!! Our trip to Jordan wouldn’t nearly have been the same without our amazing tour guide. He always went above and beyond 200% effort in everything we did. We were always on time and got to see way more than we ever imagined. I mentioned wanting a melon while driving to the Dead Sea and he hailed a melon truck 1 minute later and got the driver to give us melons and we ate them by the Dead Sea and it was delicious!! Definitely ask for restaurant recommendations as well, he knows the spots!! One of the most fun tours I’ve ever been on. He said some people take the tour 3 times, alone, with family, and with friends. I can definitely see why!! Don’t miss out!!!
