Croatia Highlights & Experiences

Dubrovnik

Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, Dubrovnik is regarded as one of the most prominent tourist attractions in Croatia and the Mediterranean. The city features stunning architecture, and boasts spectacular churches, monasteries, museums, fountains and the famous walls that surround the old city. The views of the old city and harbour are superb and not to be missed.

Split

The second largest city in Croatia, home to Diocletian’s Palace – one of the most imposing Roman ruins and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Within the atmospheric old walls of the city experience the Dalmatian way of life with its thriving bars and restaurants.

Zagreb

This vibrant capital boasts culture, theatres, architecture and a superb gastronomy scene. Do as the locals do and sit in any one of the numerous cafes and watch the world go by. A truly continental city!

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Featuring interconnected crystal-clear lakes and gushing waterfalls, Plitvice Lakes will get the camera shutter going! There are 16 vibrant lakes which form over 90 spectacular cascades and waterfalls.

Hvar

Considered the most fashionable of the  Dalmatian islands, Hvar is one of the most visited places in Croatia. The city of Hvar features a car-free Old Town, a 16th-century cathedral, a picturesque fishing harbor, and a hilltop fortress. The island is also home to some of the country’s top hotels and seafood restaurants.

Korcula

Lying just off the Dalmatian coast in the Adriatic Sea, Korcula is an island hamlet with quiet fishing villages. Often labelled “Little Dubrovnik” with its medieval walls, the main town is laid out in a fishbone pattern to minimise gusts of winds through the alleyways.

Brac

On the southern coast of the island of Brac is Zlatni Rat, a beautiful beach jutting out into the crystal waters of the Adriatic Sea and one of Croatia’s best-known images.

Pula

The Pula Amphitheatre is a rare example of an entirely preserved Roman amphitheatre. If you’re lucky, there may be a performance on while you’re there!

Opatija

A seaside resort town sprawling along the coast. Parts of Opatija perfectly preserve the 19th Century. The waterfront is connected by a 12km long promenade featuring statues, fountains, restaurants and cafes.

Croatia Tours, Packages & Cruises Selection Tips

Find some of our top tips for choosing the perfect trip for you!

Consider multiple nights stays in Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb. These three cities provide a wealth of experiences as well as starting off points to discover nearby sites. From Dubrovnik, it is possible to do a day trip to the city of Kotor in Montenegro, or Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina. From Zagreb, a day trip to Slovenia to visit the beautiful Lake Bled, and the quaint capital city of Ljubljana. Split provides the traveller an opportunity to do a day trip to the beautiful islands of Brac or Hvar.
Cruising is the perfect way to travel along the Adriatic coast of Croatia, visiting numerous islands and their towns, as well as secluded bays for a chance to swim. Remember that cruising allows you to visit numerous locations but only unpack once at the start of your multi day cruise.
Join one of our many Escorted Tours. With a minimum of two passengers to guarantee departures, it removes the hassle of getting from one destination to another.
Many of the historic towns in Croatia have cobbled streets. Make sure good walking shoes are worn to reduce the chance of injury.
Whilst Croatia is part of the European Union, it has maintained the use of its local currency the Kuna.
Take a road trip and rent a car, the Adriatic coastal road from Split to Dubrovnik is a must see.
Visit one of the many National Parks. Plitvice is touristy however there are many more parks to discover such as Risnjak, North Velebit and Paklenica. If you are curious about the Croatian islands why not visit Kornati, Mljet or Brijuni.
During high season (July, August) in places such as Plitvice, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar and Istria expect crowds, queues and traffic jams.

How to Get to Croatia

The three main airports are Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik with numerous airlines servicing one or more of these cities. Qatar and Emirates fly to Zagreb and Emirates flies to Dubrovnik. Other towns such as Zadar, Rijeka and Pula have limited seasonal service. Ferries operate around the Croatian islands and from Italy to Croatia.

Loved our TOur

Review for: Egypt in Style

Sun Island Tours was very helpful and accessible whenever we had questions during the planning stage. The Cruise was wonderful, everything we had ever hoped for. We had a great time and met some wonderful people. The Greek Island package was great too! Sun Island choose the best hotels for us in Greece, and made sure that each hotel catered for us perfectly. In Santorini we wanted to stay at the beach, rather than the cliffside. All of our friends kept recommending the cliffside, for the caldera view. We spoke with Sun Island, and they ended up accepting our request for the beach, and choosing the perfect hotel with a view of the water. We were there for only two nights, so they organised a wonderful volcano trip with a sunset cruise on the first day, and we saw the sunset from Oia. The following night they recommended the perfect restaurant for us. The cruise in Croatia was wonderful. Very well organsied. Im glad we went for the deluve option which included touring in each destinations. The food was 5 star and sites were well beyond my dreams. What an amazing part of the world.

Thank you Sun Island Tours

Review for: Venice To Split

Thank you Sun Island Tours Just last week we returned from our 3 week holiday to Venice, Ljubliana (Slovenia) & Croatia. My husband has never really had the desire to travel to Europe and when I asked him if he wanted to go, he responded ‘not really, but you just tell me when & I will have my bag packed’. I was really worried what his thoughts were. Not only could I see that he was having a good time, he told me that it was a great family holiday. Having a background in the building industry, he was amazed with the buildings, the feature, textures and the construction of them. Still being a bit budget conscious, you recommended Hotel Malibran in Venice that was European 3 star. I wasn’t sure what that meant, but it was clean & comfortable. The breakfast was included and was enough to give us a great start to the day. We stayed approx. a 10 min walk from San Marco and I think it was a better location. Loved exploring the back alleys. Although we took up your recommendation of Ljubliana in Slovenia, this was the place I was concerned about. After now ticking this off my list I can only describe Ljubliana as a scene out a romantic move, stunning! Side note – I might have to revisit as we had a half pouring raining afternoon and I didn’t go on the funicular to the Castle. The half day tours to Lake Bled, Postojna cave & Predjama castle were perfect and just the right amount of time. City Hotel was close to the old town, great stay & yummy breakfast. From here we took the train to Zargreb (another experience that I would 100% recommend). Short stop in Zargreb before we went to Split via Plitvice Lakes. Plitvice is worth the visit. We booked a 7 night small boat cruise from Split to Dubrovnik. I loved every single port. The crew were great and the Cruise Director was kind enough to recommend some family friendly restaurants. A travel tip for your clients – they will do your washing on board and it is only approx. $30. A highlight for my daughter was the island of Vis and visiting the locations of were they filmed Mamma Mia 2. At the end of our trip we stayed 2 nights in Dubrovnik. Thank you for booking us into Hotel More! Spectacular in every way. Whilst there we enjoyed an afternoon at the cave bar watching the sunset for my daughter’s birthday. Probably the best day of my holiday. We can’t thank you enough for the fabulous family holiday that we have just had. Your staff looked after every detail and I’m looking forward to booking my next holiday with you.

I booked my last holiday

Review for: Wonders of Croatia and Slovenia

I booked my last holiday to Europe through Sun island tours and had them organise my itinerary in Slovenia and Croatia. We had excellent service in organising dates and quotes for flights and accommodation. We also had very clear and open lines of communication with Sun island tours throughout the trip. In Slovenia, we went on a day trip to Lake Bled and Postanja caves and had a fantastic and knowledgeable tour guide. A+++, would recommend, and I have already booked my next holiday with Sun Island tours.

Hey Rebecca, we're so glad Slovenia is getting the attention it deseves. For such a small country it packs a punch in terms of food, culture, and incredible sightseeing. It's so green too, with over 30% of the country being national park. We hope you enjoy the next trip as much as the last. Regards, The Sun Island Team
